Firstly, we would like to thank ALL who entered our BAKO North Western Birthday cake competition!
Our family tree has grown over the past 50 years, and we’ve added everyone from cafes to colleges to our client list, but we still love hearing from all the small independent bakers that started us off on our journey. That’s why we wanted you to play a big part in our celebrations by designing our 50th Birthday Cake.
The criteria of the competition was left completely up to the creative talents of our entrants, who put their imaginations to the test to come up with a show-stopping Birthday Cake concept.
We had numerous entries from across the North West in both our professional and student categories and the standard was extremely high. The BAKO North Western team and the judges from Renshaw were dazzled by each entrant’s creativity and impressed by the decorating skills on show, not to mention all the hard work and time that was spent on each cake.
Our very deserving winners from Wednesday’s competition are as follows:
First place in the professional category went to Marion Flaherty of Wedding cakes by Marion, with her stunning three tier cake, decorated in BAKO’s red, white and blue colours and adorned with lots of miniature sugar paste delights, from battenburgs, to profiteroles, to pies. Showcasing her amazing modelling skills, the cake even had a sugar paste version of one of BAKO’s delivery vans and the top tier was created in the shape of a chef’s hat. Congratulations on all your hard work Marion!
Second place in our professional category went to Sue Lea from The Cake Room, Blackpool for her novelty BAKO delivery van cake. Extremely intricate details went into the design of this cake, even down to the window wipers being crafted from sugar paste!
As BAKO North Western are strong supporters of the future of baking talent, we also had a ‘Student’ category for those who are studying towards a qualification in a bakery or related field, which received a vast number of entries from budding bakers.
First place in the ‘Student’ category went to Rebecca Compton of Sheffield College, with this impressive four tier Birthday cake. We loved the finishing touches that went into the design of this cake, from the decorative bunting to the delicately hand painted birds and flowers.
Second place in the ‘Student’ category went to Mary Graham of Blackpool and the Fylde College, with her traditional 50th Birthday present design. Decorated in BAKO colours, this cake’s simple yet spectacular design really portrayed the BAKO brand and embodied the joyous nature of our 50th anniversary.
We may have found the winner for our BAKO North Western cake contest, but the 50th Birthday celebrations certainly aren’t over. Don’t forget to save the date in your diary for our 1964 themed family fun day on 3rd August, celebrating fifty years of providing the region’s local bakers with all the essential ingredients they need to whip up their edible masterpieces.
