Wimbledon’s flavour champions

30 June, 2015

Wimbledon’s culinary traditions are almost as famous as the tournament itself, so how can your baking take inspiration from this iconic tennis tournament?

As July rolls around, it’s once again time for tennis fever to grip the nation, with proud fans up and down the country ready to shout ‘Come on Andy’ at their televisions. More importantly for bakers though, this is a chance to take advantage of the quintessentially British flavour combinations that Wimbledon fans have been enjoying for decades.

A slice of victory

What could be better than Wimbledon’s signature dish of fresh, juicy strawberries and smooth cream? How about sandwiching the two between light, airy sheets of buttery puff pastry to create a summer slice worthy of a champion?

Anyone for Pimms?

Catering company Asparagus Green have had the ingenious idea of recreating the refreshing taste of Pimms in cake form. Sweet candied orange and strawberry cubes contrast against a hint of cooling cucumber and a Pimms-enriched sponge, resulting in an unforgettable flavour sensation.

A twist on a classic Sometimes you can’t beat a classic. Jam tarts are incredibly quick and easy to bake and make a great take-away treat for customers on-the-go. For a special Wimbledon tip, try piping curved lines on top of your zesty lemon tarts to pay tribute to the tournament’s vibrant yellow tennis balls. 2 Time to celebrate You shouldn’t have to be the one lifting the trophy for a taste of the high life during Wimbledon season. The Black Swan pub in Cheshire has already popped open the bubbly to add a fizzy hint of sophistication to this dainty dessert trio.

Strawberry & cream dream

We couldn’t resist adding another strawberries and cream recipe to this list: it is Wimbledon after all! Baltic Bakehouse in Liverpool have piped a generous helping of cream into their crisp, golden doughnuts, finished off with a single fresh strawberry.

Catering for birthday parties with BAKO NW

19 June, 2015

For anyone in the catering industry, preparing delicious and varied menus for large groups of people can be a challenging task. Whether you’re whipping up a menu for a fourth birthday party or a fortieth, it’s vital that your creations are the star of the show.

At BAKO North Western, we know it’s essential that these events run smoothly, so we’ve put our 50 years of food industry experience to good use to ensure you can create delicious menu’s to appeal to a variety of ages.

Catering for a room full of excitable children may seem a daunting task, but with a little know-how you can put on a feast to keep them full of energy for all the party activities your customers have planned.

Why not try putting together a selection of sandwiches, crisps and drinks? BAKO stock a variety of lunchboxes to make this a simple process. Cheese, ham and jam sandwiches on crust-less bread are sure to be popular with younger guests and using cutters to create different shapes can make them a fun option too.

For a dessert option with a twist, how about a make-your-own ice cream sundae bar? Simply serve a mixture of flavoured ice cream with a variety of toppings and sauces for the children to choose from. Chocolate chips and popping candy would make great additions, especially when served with classic chocolate or strawberry sauce.

Not forgetting a sweet treat at the end, how about giving out cake pops as an alternative to party bags; they’re the perfect take-away treat.

Cake pops

Grab-and-go food is the ideal option for teenage birthday parties as they can be easily enjoyed whilst socialising. Serving dishes that are on trend are sure to be a hit with this often hard to please audience. Sliders, miniature pizzas and hotdogs can be easily passed around as canapés and served alongside large bowls of nachos and chips, to make the party seem more sophisticated and grown-up.

Why not keep the miniature trend going and serve doughnut holes, bite size brownies and cupcakes as a sweet ending to the party?

Adults may be looking for alternatives to traditional buffet catering options. For intimate gatherings, tear and share breads and bruschetta are ideal for those looking to offer something sophisticated yet filling. A varied range of canapés ensure there’s something for everyone, or a cheeseboard with a selection of cheeses and chutneys is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

For those after something a bit more traditional, BAKO stock plenty of pies, pasties and sausage rolls to keep all guests satisfied throughout the event. Why not try our delicious ethnic buffet range to add some spice to the menu?

To finish things off, how about serving individual chocolate fondues for dessert? Guests are sure to enjoy tucking into homemade marshmallows and fresh fruit dipped in warm melted chocolate, and for a Spanish twist, churros would make an on trend and indulgent addition.

To ensure your delicious range of dishes can be served in style, BAKO stock a range of cutlery, napkins and serving boxes perfect for any event.

We’d love to hear about the birthday menus you have to offer, or you can share some snaps of parties you’ve catered for on our Twitter.
