Celebrating Father’s Day

11 June, 2014

While for many bakers, the famous cliché of learning to bake with your mother may ring true, for this one day of the year, it’s time to focus on the special men instead and celebrate Father’s Day. It’s time for dads across the UK to have a relaxing day off, and what better way than with cake?

There’s no chance of being stuck for edible gift ideas this Father’s Day, especially with all the exciting ideas that the bakers of the North West have already dreamt up on Twitter.

Hey Little Cupcake

Who said cupcakes weren’t for men? Hey Little Cupcake have created a Father’s Day collection of manly cupcakes, made in a selection of different flavours and topped with complimentary buttercream and sugar paste decorations, including moustaches! Why not let your customers say thank you to their dad this year with a cupcake?

Liverpool Cake Company

Many dads are renowned for sloping off to sit on the sofa with the remote and a cup of tea, which inspired this brilliant idea from the Liverpool Cake Company. We couldn’t think of anything more personal than letting your customers surprise their dad this Father’s day with a sugar paste model of himself.

Melting House

Melting House in West Yorkshire has created a treat for all those dads who have a bit of a sweet tooth: personalised chocolate plaques. Giving customers the option to choose their dad’s favourite flavour of chocolate and add a personalised piped icing message, these are the ideal gift to make any man feel special.

Bisquites

For dads that aren’t keen on cake, Bisquites, a Mother and Daughter bakery offering unique homemade iced biscuits, have come up with the ideal solution: dad shaped biscuits! Decorated with icing, these can easily be customised to feature a customer’s dad’s favourite colour scheme.

Walkden Cake Company

What could be more quintessentially British than sitting down with a cup of tea and a cake? Walkden Cake Co have gone for the best of British approach with these chocolate and vanilla cupcakes, adorned with rich buttercream and sugar paste toppers.

Bakers, we’d love to hear what you have planned for the dads of the North West this weekend, and don’t forget to let us know if you need to stock up on any baking essentials.

Tropical tastes of Summer

9 June, 2014

It may be taking it’s time, but Summer is slowly starting to set in and BAKO sees this as a great opportunity for the North-West’s bakers to start experimenting with fresh new Summer flavours.

As the sun has started to creep in, BAKO’s Twitter feed has slowly started seeing some tempting tropical flavours appear, much to our joy. Amongst the display of mouth-watering snaps on Twitter, we’ve spotted a few ideas that we thought could inspire your summer menu.

Paradise Cakes Strawberries and cream go hand in hand with the traditional Great British Summer, becoming especially popular when Wimbledon season approaches. After all, what could be more quintessentially British than a light and airy Victoria sponge, filled with jam and cream and adorned with fresh strawberries? These two complementary ingredients are also the basis of a variety of tasty yet very simple desserts.

Bakezilla Bespoke Cakes

We didn’t think there could be anything better than a cold ice-cream on a Summer’s day, but Bakezilla has proved us wrong with cake-filled ice cream cones. These little treat are baked, topped with a swirl of velvety buttercream and decorated with a drizzle of raspberry sauce and a chocolate flake to give the authentic effect of an ice cream!

Inspiration from BAKO North Western

We thought we’d also share some of our own inspiration with the baking community. Why not whip up a gorgeously glazed pineapple upside down cake for your customers? It couldn’t be easier with this recipe using Macphie’s Tropical Cake Sensation Mix, which you could also use to create tropical Muffins topped with tangy orange and vanilla buttercream and dried fruits.

What will be making an appearance on your Summer dessert menu this year? Are you feeling inspired to try your hand at some of these tropical bakes? Contact BAKO North Western to stock up on all the professional quality ingredients and supplies that you’ll need to get started.

Bake BAKO a Birthday Cake

2 June, 2014

It’s hard to believe, but 2014 marks BAKO North Western’s 50th Birthday; fifty years of providing the region’s local bakers with all their essential ingredients to whip up baking masterpieces.

To mark the event, BAKO want you to bake our Birthday cake! Our family tree has grown over the past 50 years, and we’ve added everyone from cafes to colleges to our client list, but we still love hearing from all the small independent bakers that started us off on our journey. That’s why we want you to play a big part in our celebrations by creating us the perfect 50th Birthday cake, to be in with a chance to win some fantastic prizes!

We want you to dazzle us with your cake decoration skills, so be as creative as possible and let your imagination run wild! You can find out more information and register online by clicking here, but you’ll need to hurry because registration closes on Wednesday 4th June.

If you’re looking for inspiration, here are some Birthday cakes that we spotted on Twitter that we think have that wow factor!

Cakes by Vanilla

We really admire this decadent chocolate ruffle cake by Cakes by Vanilla; simple yet sophisticated, it would impress at any occasion.

Fiona Cairns

Fiona Cairns has gone all out with this Alice and Wonderland themed Birthday cake and treats. BAKO love the idea of creating themed bakes, as you can be as extravagant as you like, playing with colour, taste, fillings and size.

The Cakebank

It’s not just wedding cakes that have multiple tiers, Birthday cakes can too, like this three tier present cake from Denise Banks. We particularly like the intricate work with sugarpaste, creating the bow that tops this cake.

Gingerbread Lane

Gingerbread Lane demonstrate how easy it can be to create an eye-catching design using simple piping in contrasting colours.

We look forward to seeing your entries on the 11th June! Keep an eye out on Twitter and our blog for the latest news on the contest.
