National Craft Bakers’ Week

29 August, 2013

For the fifth year running, National Craft Bakers’ Week is back to bring together the passionate baking community from all over the country and celebrate craft baking in the local community. Here at BAKO, we are extremely proud and excited to be supporting this fantastic national event and we hope that you too, will be joining us for the week-long celebration.

Craft Bakers' Week

The event, organised by The National Association of Master Bakers and The Scottish Association of Master Bakers, aims to provide support for local bakers across the UK. From Monday 7th October – Sunday 13th October, many high street bakers all over the country will be taking part to showcase their passion, pride and commitment to the craft baking industry. During the week, members of the Great British public are invited to taste, sample and purchase a variety of handcrafted cakes, pastries and breads from Britain’s skilled craftsmen and women.

As one of the leading suppliers to the catering industry, BAKO North Western see National Craft Bakers’ Week as an exciting opportunity for local bakers to gain vital recognition for their businesses. All bakers taking part will receive a ‘How To Get Involved’ guide and POS material for their shops, including posters and bunting, to help them promote their business in the local community and online. Access to these benefits costs just £5.00 per business, with proceeds going to the event’s Charity partner, The Teenage Cancer Trust.

This year’s National Craft Bakers’ Week also comes with star-studded support from TV’s Fabulous Baker Brothers, Tom and Henry Herbert, of Hobbs House Bakery in the Cotswolds. The Brothers will be hosting a baking masterclass where one lucky national competition winner will receive expert advice from two of the industry’s leading craft bakers.

Commenting on their passion for this year’s ‘Love Your Baker’ campaign message, encouraging local communities to support their bakers, Tom and Henry stated:

“There is rightly a great feeling of pride about British food at the moment and National Craft Bakers’ Week is a great way to remind everyone that bakers are very much part of this story. Baking is a real skill and one that we need to celebrate and support.”

The caketail trend: bakers get inspired by classic cocktails

1 August, 2013

To celebrate the fact BAKO North Western are offering three for two on Puratos’ Satin Crème Cake Mixes this August, in a range of exotic flavours, this week’s blog looks at one of the biggest baking concepts of the past few years: caketails.

The caketails trend sees bakers take their inspiration from classic cocktail flavour combinations to create enticing cupcake treats, often combined with creative cocktail-themed decorations. We’ve taken a look around the web for some of our favourite examples of the caketails trend to put together this handy set of recipe ideas and decorating tips.

If you like Pina Coladas

Recreate the tropical taste of a pina colada by topping cupcakes baked from Puratos’ smooth Coconut Satin Crème Cake Mix with zingy pineapple icing, or follow BAKO Own Label’s free Pina Colada caketail recipe card. For an extra special touch, top with toasted shredded coconut and caramelised pineapple pieces or even a celebratory miniature cocktail umbrella.

From Russia with love

The White Russian’s decadent mix of coffee liqueur and cream lends itself perfectly to desserts. Serve up Puratos’ Coffee Satin Crème Cake Mix cupcakes with a healthy dollop of whipped cream and lightly dust with cocoa to finish.

Hit refresh

Manchester afternoon tea specialists Sugar Junction have brought a hint of zing to the table for their take on the caketails trend, creating this inviting lime and mint mojito cake. For a simple recipe, take a look at BAKO Own Label’s mojito caketail recipe card.

Far-East flair

This one pays homage to one of Singapore’s most famous exports, the Singapore Sling. Mix Puratos’ zesty Lemon Satin Crème Cake Mix with chopped glacé cherries and top with lemon icing and a drizzle of cherry syrup for a fruity masterpiece.

Chocoholic’s choice

An incredibly indulgent cocktail, the mudslide contains a rich mix of cream, coffee liqueur and chocolate ice cream that’s easily converted into a cake treat made with Puratos’ Chocolate Satin Crème Cake Mix, cream filling and coffee icing. Sprinkle with a few chocolate-coated coffee beans and serve in a cocktail glass to create a great addition to any restaurant dessert menu.

How would you interpret the caketail trend? We’d love to hear further ideas from local bakers and chefs on Twitter.
